National Football League players respond to John Ross’s freaky speed at Combine
Adidas made a heck of an offer before the National Football League scouting combine: Anyone breaking Chris Johnson’s record of a 4.24-second 40-yard dash would get his own island valued at just under a million dollars. “I want to be top five in everything. I’m definitely going to go for it”.
“I feel good”, Ross told the NFL Network after his record-setting sprint.
He then added, “Under 4.3”. He ran it in 4.22 seconds. At his Friday media interview, he predicted a sub-4.30 clocking, but was no bolder than that.
Jackson cold called Ross and invited him to workout. Adidas, looking to add a little extra hype to the event, made a decision to offer $1 million to anyone who could break Johnson’s record. Ross was wearing Nike cleats.
Now, this, the fastest 40 ever record at the NFL’s scouting summit, in a league and position that values speed as the ultimate weapon against a defense’s press coverages and pass rushers. But if somebody does break it. But I’m happy with what I did.
Several wide receiver-needy teams, such as the Cincinnati Bengals, Baltimore Ravens, and the Philadelphia Eagles will probably be interested in knowing more about Ross following his record-breaking 40 time.
Missing OTAs could be seen as a negative, but he would miss them anyway, because Washington is on a quarter system and final exams don’t end until June 9.
Prior to the 40-yard dash, Ross had standout performances in other events, including a 37.0-inch vertical leap (tied for fifth place) and 133.0-inch broad jump (fifth).
The main thing that John Ross wanted to do at the Combine was show how fast he is. I wanted to come here and enjoy this process.
Ross was already graded as a first-round prospect by most measures, but this makes him all the more intriguing.
So there has been a lot of talk this week about the Titans potentially trading for Saints WR Brandin Cooks.
With that frame, production and speed, he very well could be on the Arizona Cardinals’ radar.
