National Football League to play games outside United States and UK next season
The new resolution, ratified and announced during a one-day owners’ meeting here, extends the NFL’s ability to schedule worldwide regular season games through 2025.
Possible hosts for future games in the NFL global Series include stadiums in Mexico, Brazil and Germany, in addition to the United Kingdom and Canada.
Eighteen of the league’s 32 clubs have played regular-season games at Wembley, including the Broncos in 2010. When we attacked it, we had to find more than one thing that can work.
The early success of the series convinced the NFL’s owners to approve an extension in 2011 and now again with another extension in 2015 that will keep worldwide games happening for at least another decade. Who knows how the National Football League might decide to expand, via these regular-season contests in the global Series.
The league also is looking at Toronto and Vancouver, and several cities in Germany have expressed interest in hosting games. “Those would be our next stage, and we have offices in those three countries”.
A matchup for the first game in Mexico City hasn’t yet been announced, but it is expected to include the Pittsburgh Steelers, who are close to finalizing a deal to play a game in Mexico, according to AS.com.
Earlier in the year, the NFL reached an agreement with Tottenham Hotspur of the English Premier League to play a minimum of two games per year during a 10-year span at Tottenham’s new stadium, which is set to open in 2018. The league can also play in other countries, via the resolution. So get ready for more games in other countries.
Dallas Cowboys COO Stephen Jones said, per Don Banks of Sports Illustrated, Dallas is interested in playing a game in Mexico, but their biggest issue is losing a home game.
That issue wouldn’t necessarily exist with the Pro Bowl, which could feasibly be on the move as soon as the 2017 season, Waller said.
