National Football League to review Panthers’ medical handling of Newton hit
Only, instead of championship rings, their latest clubbing of Cam Newton will surely come with some hefty fines. The Denver Broncos hosted the Carolina Panthers on Thursday, September 8, 2016. Safety Darian Stewart was flagged for his helmet-to-helmet shot on the Panthers’ final drive, but it was offset by an intentional grounding penalty on Newton.
Stewart said after the game he felt as if he led with his shoulder, not his head.
“I guess they made a judgment that he was OK, so they chose to let him keep going, ” Jets cornerback Buster Skrine told The Post. One thing is for certain and no one, not even the National Football League is arguing the point; the refs screwed up by not calling helmet-to-helmet hits against Cam Newton. “I’ve just got to move on”. The insane thing is that the Broncos were only penalized for one of the hits, which has caused many to question the referees who were working the game.
It is argued that Newton is refereed differently than any other quarterback in the league, this may be true, but Newton plays unlike any other quarterback in the league. At 6-foot-5 and 260 pounds, Newton is one of the NFL’s larger quarterbacks. He kept coming back for more all night, throwing laser passes to convert on third downs and running through the defense for large chunks of yardage. “We weren’t communicating well and it cost us some big plays”.
“Everything we did a year ago just shows the kind of resiliency this team has”, linebacker Shane Ray said.
Last night’s NFL kickoff featured a pre-game protest, a game-breaking missed field goal, and, of course, an apparent breach of the league’s concussion protocol.
Kubiak said leading up to the game that he wanted his players to play with emotion. He’s roughly the same size, if not bigger, than a few of the men tackling him and I really think that’s a factor in some of these “judgement” calls. The Broncos’ defense doesn’t need to explain what they are; they show it every game. You want it back.
“The NFL is committed to the proper application of the concussion protocol”, NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said in a statement.
Cam has a cheeky grin, has a new dance for every touchdown and personality you just have to love, unless you’re on the other side of the ball.
The NFL has released a statement citing Brandon Marshall’s hit on Newton as a flaggable offence, which is agreeable. I think I heard Ray Lewis say you have guys of all sizes and they’re falling to the ground, if Cam’s moving, you never know, these angles, it’s hard to tell these angles.
Jhabvala: If we’re going off the season-opener alone, then yes. I’m not one to call for the wuss-ification of the sport we all love, but enforcing the actual rules of the game equally isn’t asking for too much and Newton, in almost every game he’s in, does not get the calls his QB peers do.
