National protest on cards….war vets urge Mugabe to quit!
Earlier on Tuesday the main opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai said he’d visited a 62-year old woman seen being kicked by police outside a court in Harare on Friday.
Anti-riot police clear roads during a protest by opposition youths who were demonstrating against alleged brutality by security agents in the capital Harare, Zimbabwe August 24, 2016.
Back in the country’s capital Harare however, demonstrations were banned “because they are likely to cause public disorder”, according to a government notice issued on Thursday.
Mugabe has been in power since 1980, when the southern African nation attained its independence.
The protesters said they were prepared to continue with the demonstrations until Mugabe, 92, stepped down.
He has previously crushed such movements during the course of his authoritarian rule, but speculation has grown over his succession amid increasing signs that he is suffering from ill health. He intends to stand again in the upcoming election.
Friday’s planned protest would have brought together 18 opposition parties, which had been fragmented in the past. The ban was announced a day before opposition parties were to hold an anti-government demonstration.
On Wednesday, businesses, including banks, informal markets and shops were open, ignoring the strike call by social media groups #ThisFlag led by pastor Evan Mawarire and #Tajamuka, whose leader is in custody on public violence charges.
Friday’s protest drew a violent response from Zimbabwean police, with tear gas being fired and protesters beaten. Unemployment has been estimated as high as 80 percent of the workforce and a shortage of USA dollars has led the country to announce the introduction of bond notes-a surrogate currency pegged to the value of the US dollar.
“Economically and socially Zimbabwe is on the brink”, HRW researcher Dewa Mavhinga said.
Criticism of the brutal behaviour of the Zimbabwe police during the recent protests is mounting.
