Nationwide protest for minimum wage increase felt in Greater Cincinnati
Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed the order raising the minimum for state government workers from an hourly rate of $8.75 to $15.00 per hour starting in 2018.
People attend the strike in support of a $15-per-hour minimum wage in NY City, the United States, November 10, 2015. Republican Leader John Flanagan reacted to Governor Cuomo’s plan to submit legislation to raise the minimum wage for all workers in the state when the new session starts in January.
Still, however, public opinion polls show the minimum wage is very popular, particularly among a large group of workers in NY City, the members of the Democratic Party and various Minority voters. We fight for fairness.
The Fight for 15 is bankrolled by the Service Employees global Union, one of the most influential labor groups in USA politics.
“The cost of housing has been going up, the cost of food has been going up, the cost of living has been going up, but our wages are still the same”, he said. Currently, the federal minimum wage is set at $7.25, though a number of states and cities have higher wage floors. Hundreds of people are coming together demanding minimum wage be raised to $15 an hour. You raise the minimum wage.
Workers are not just concerned for the community youths either; a trend has been occurring where municipal health care facilities are being bought by private entities. Conservative orgs like the Empire Center are already pushing against an increase to $15 per hour, arguing it will stunt job growth. State workers outside of the city will reach that level by the end of 2021.
The governor’s announcement will affect roughly 10,000 workers and will be phased in over six years for Upstate employees.
“McDonald’s and our independent franchisees support paying our valued employees fair wages aligned with a competitive marketplace”, the company said in a statement.
“That’s not true only because the jobs we work for right now are multi-billion dollar companies so they can easily pay us $15 an hour”, Jones says.
This may have come as a surprise to a few, especially in a city that is generally ranked among the most liberal in the country: 46.9 percent of voters in the city are registered Democrats, and only 13.9 percent are registered Republicans.
