Navy Beats Army 21-17 Recap
TV: 3 p.m. ET, CBS. Whoever loses sings first and whoever wins sings second, and the scene has become quite familiar: For 14 seasons now, Navy has gotten to celebrate with its alma mater last.
Navy has defeated Army 21-17 for the 14th straight win in the Army-Navy rivalry game. Tilman caught the pass in stride and ran 30 yards before diving for the pylon to score the go-ahead, game-winning touchdown.
Reynolds’ second rushing TD was his 85th career score, the most for any FBS or FCS Division I player.
Niumatalolo handed bottled water reserved for Navy players and staff members to the security guards at the gate to help them cool off on a warm day.
This might be their best team in decades. The Midshipmen led 21-17 entering the fourth quarter and Army had six different chances to take a lead, but were stopped by Navy each time.
Realistically it will take the pressure of the rivalry or Navy looking ahead to their Bowl game and taking Army for granted if the Black Knights are to pull off the upset that would make up for all the losses that came before it.
Army got ball to start the 2nd half and had all the momentum from the first half when they scored that late touchdown for the 17-14 lead. He scrambled for 35 yards on the drive.
The senior star finished Saturday’s game with 113 passing yards, 136 rushing yards and had a hand in all three of Navy’s touchdowns (two rushing, one passing).
Navy sacked Carter three times and in the second half appeared to rattle him.
“Our guys gave it everything that they had, laid it on the line, and it just came down to execution”, Army coach Jeff Monken said. Keenan Reynolds struggled at times, but the Navy quarterback still managed to take off for a 58-yard score in the first and a one-yard touchdown in the second. Army and Navy didn’t just design new helmets for the game, each institution created different helmets for each of the position groups. Reynolds and Carter were both impressive through the air for two run-heavy offenses.
“We have young talent that is going into the offseason and won’t be as young next year”.
Chip Kelly is a football junkie and he’s big on the military, so I’m guessing he’ll be attending this game, but I don’t know for sure. Army outgained Navy 345 yards to 312.
Reynolds has a 31-13 career record as a starter and he is Navy’s career leading rusher. He cemented his legacy here with his fourth win over Army.
Additionally, Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo is now 8-0 against Army during his tenure with the Midshipmen. Navy won the game 17-10. “I’m not going anywhere”, and then next thing you see is him on a plane flying somewhere. “How do you do that?” “I love what it stands for”.
