Navy QB Reynolds breaks NCAA rushing record
Navy quarterback Keenan Reynolds broke the NCAA record for rushing touchdowns, increasing his career total to 81 with four scores, and the Midshipmen cruised to a 55-14 victory over Southern Methodist on Saturday.
Reynolds, playing his final home game, set the major college football record for rushing touchdowns before an announced crowd of 35,778 on senior day at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
Reynolds entered Saturday’s game tied with former Wisconsin running back Montee Ball for the FBS record.
He may have broken the record early in the game, but Reynolds was nowhere near finished.
The senior quarterback rushed for 137 yards and threw a 72-yard touchdown pass to help Navy (8-1, 6-0) earn its fourth straight win. Reynolds completed a nine-yard pass to slotback DeBrandon Sanders to get into Mustangs territory and ran for 10 yards on the ensuing play to the 34. The Midshipmen exploited this weakness, running for 403 yards on 65 carries.
Navy was able to force another three and out on the next drive, and the ensuing result for the Navy offense was all too familiar with Keenan Reynolds taking it 43 yards to the house and grabbing his 79th rushing touchdown of his career.
Davis scored on a 1-yard run late in the half, but Navy went up 34-7 when Demond Brown scored on 32-yard run to close out a 78-yard drive. Slotback Joshua Walker and backup quarterback Tago Smith each added 8-yard runs to round out Navy’s scoring.
