Navy tops Army 21-17 for 14th straight win in series
That’s given the Black Knights three weeks to prepare for the Mids in relative seclusion on the bank of the Hudson River. The 52-31 matchup proved that Greg Ward Jr was just slightly better than Keenan Reynolds, but not by much. This might be the best Navy team since the 1960s, and an Army team with a losing record hasn’t beaten a Navy team with a winning record since 1899 – so this was certainly closer than expected. Carter rolled right, keeping it on an option, but was stopped for a four-yard loss by sophomore linebacker D.J. Palmore. They came up just short of a comeback in the fourth quarter, starting with a missed field goal at 29 yards early in the quarter and then a lost fumble at the Navy 34 yard line on a promising drive. Danny Wild, USA TODAY Sports Army running back Christian Drake rushes the ball.
The chances kept coming, and Army finally looked like it was in business when Carter hit Tyler Campbell for a 35-yard pass with under three minutes left. The Midshipmen won their 14th consecutive game against Army, extending the longest winning streak in the history of the rivalry.
In the record booksReynolds has had a spectacular senior season to cap off a tremendous career at Navy.
Reynolds’ second score, a 1-yard dive at the 12:18 mark of the second quarter, gave the Midshipmen a 14-10 edge. He played Saturday – and all season – like one of the top football players in the country. On Saturday, the talented senior hopes to add another milestone to his impressive list of accomplishments: first quarterback to go 4-0 as a starter in the Army-Navy series. Army WR Edgar Poe’s six touchdown catches this season are the most by a Cadet since Jeremy Trimble’s seven scores in 2007….
The Midshipmen put together an unsuccessful campaign to get Reynolds a nod for the Heisman Trophy. In the run-first Army offense, that’s usually not a good sign.
The Navy quarterback scored his 85th career rushing touchdown in the second quarter against Navy, becoming the all-time leader in rushing touchdowns in the division. A single score has decided four of the past five games.
Tillman was no slouch.
Navy’s football team had boarded the bus and headed for the exit of the Philadelphia Eagles’ practice facility when coach Ken Niumatalolo ordered it to stop.
Citing the coach’s agent, the Gazette reports BYU has not made any contract offers at this point and that Monday’s event is simply a meeting and that Niumatalolo is doing his due diligence in hearing what the Cougars have to say. Should he leave, expect Navy to promote offensive coordinator Ivin Jasper to head coach. They’ve also competed in a bowl game in each of his seasons as head coach. He was critical in the game last season as his one-yard touchdown run is what sealed the victory. With the Army-Navy game Saturday afternoon, Navy officials had arranged for a helicopter to transport Reynolds from Philadelphia in time for the presentation. It’ll take place at Navy-Marine Corps.
Greenert Pays Homage to Naval History: Here’s a throwback to last year’s CNO spirit spot, with Greenert going waaaaaay back with his uniform.
Niumatalolo could tie former Army coach Earl Blaik (8-8-2) for most wins in the series.
