Nawaz Sharif leaves for New York to attend UNGA session
On September 27, the Prime Minister will address the UN Summit for the Adoption of the Post-2015 Development Agenda.
Media reports said it is confirmed that the Prime Ministers of both countries – Narendra Modi and Nawaz Sharif – will be staying at the same hotel – New York’s iconic Waldorf Astoria and a bilateral meeting, the possibility of which is being speculated about, cannot be ruled out. “We have introduced several changes to the foreign policy, which have produced positive results”, the prime minister was quoted as saying.
The prime minister will also participate in a High-Level Roundtable on South-South Cooperation, and the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment, being hosted by President Xi Jinping of China.
Pakistan, United States and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon will co-host a peace summit.
While the general debate of the General Assembly will take start from September 28 and will conclude on October 6.
The meeting is being held to review the overall security situation with particular reference to Friday’s terrorist attack on Pakistan Air Force (PAF) camp in Badaber and the sharing of evidence with Afghanistan in relation to the brazen attack which killed 29 people.
Sharif said he condemned terrorism of all forms including the “genocide of Palestinians in Gaza”.
Modi will depart for India late September 28 or the early morning of September 29 but Sharif will remain in the city.
After the Delhi breakdown – when scheduled talks between the National Security Advisers (NSAs) were scrapped in August – Pakistan NSA Sartaj Aziz has told NDTV it is for India to decide whether it wants to initiate a meeting between him and NSA Ajit Doval in New York.
