NBC Dumps Donald Trump From ‘Celebrity Apprentice’ and More After Univision
CNN’s Brian Stelter reports that NBC might be considering continuing Celebrity Apprentice or The Apprentice without Trump as host.
“At NBC, respect and dignity for all people are cornerstones of our values,” NBC said in a statement.
Updated at 4 p.m.: Donald Trump called NBC “weak and foolish” for ending their business relationship.
When he announced his campaign for the White House two weeks ago, Trump railed against US immigration policy.
But if Trump can suggest that NBC, like Univision, is getting rid of him because of the positions he’s taking, there are all sorts of new political options available to him.
It seems likely NBC will find a new master for The Apprentice, but does NBC’s decision have any potential to backfire? A war of words then erupted between Trump and the Spanish-langauge network, with Trump threatening a lawsuit over Univision’s plan to ignore a valid contract. This has been sharply and openly brought out during Mr. Trump’s run for President of the United States.
The statements were made in the context of his promise that, if he’s elected president, he’ll be tough on immigration, order a wall built on the border with Mexico and pressure the Mexican government to do more to control the emigration of its country’s citizens north to the USA. They wanted me to do The Apprentice.
The Miss US pageant has been a modest ratings performer for the network in recent years. The pageant was slated to air on Univision’s UniMas network.
NBC had previously distanced itself from incendiary remarks Trump made about immigrants during his announcement of his candidacy, but had yet to take any actions against the business mogul. “When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best”, Trump said in the speech.
Earlier this month, he accused Mexicans of bringing drugs and crime to the USA as he announced he was seeking the Republican presidential nomination.
Univsion said its news division would continue to cover Trump and other presidential candidates. I do business with the Mexican people, but you have people coming through the border that are from all over.
He has insisted that he was criticising U.S. lawmakers, not Mexican people.
