NBC hopes ‘Hairspray’ is its next musical
Speaking at the semiannual Television Critics Association’s press tour in Pasadena, Calif., Mr. Greenblatt bragged that NBC is “the only network with two bona fide new hit fall dramas” in “Blindspot” and “Chicago Med”. “I haven’t been part of it. I don’t have those conversations with Jimmy Fallon”.
NBC has announced its fourth live musical, and this one is going to involve lots of pompadours and bouffants. “Since we changed the playing field for ourselves this year in the way we did everything – and the whole technique of doing the show is different – we set out on a path that has changed the way we do them”, Zadan explained.
“We are always anxious about his safety and his health and, yeah, there have been conversations about that”, said NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt. We got out of both of those businesses and that was July, when most of us thought he would be sort of waltzing into the background of the political arena.
“Lo-and-behold, he’s the front runner and the poll numbers are sort of astounding and he’s everywhere, every news show, morning show, night show, cable show”. He’s late-night television’s most popular personality, despite the well-publicized start of Stephen Colbert on CBS.
“I think that if we were in the business of never having anyone guest on the network that had views that disagreed with our views, we would be out of business”.
No word yet on who NBC is eyeing for the cast. The network’s previous live musicals were “Peter Pan” with Allison Williams and “The Sound of Music” with Carrie Underwood.
