According to new poll numbers, Carly Fiorina’s commanding performance in last week’s GOP debate on CNN not only benefitted her but tore down frontrunner Donald Trump.
The latest CNN/ORC poll released Sunday shows that Donald Trump is still the party’s front-runner with 24% support.
The survey has Trump declining from the 32 percent he received in a similar poll taken earlier this month. The surge follows her widely-lauded performance in this week’s Republican presidential debate.
Ben Carson, who had been running second to Trump, dropped to third place at 14 percent.
One of the Republican National Committee’s top officials has hinted that there may be no more “undercard” debates as the 2016presidential race moves forward. Florida Sen. Marco Rubio now sits at 11 percent, up from 3 percent.
Bush was followed by Sen.
The polls found five other candidates receiving less than one-half of 1 percentage point support: former Virginia Gov. Jim Gilmore, South Carolina Sen.
“It’s obviously a very important moment”, Fiorinasaid.
A slim majority (53%) saidthey are more likely to vote for someonewho would send ground troops to fight ISIS in Iraq or Syria.
Trump retorted: “She’s got a lovely face, and she’s a attractive woman“. Eleven other GOP candidates hit the main stage for a three-hour showdown at prime time. Ted Cruz and Mike Huckabee who each garnered six percent.
“We’ve talked way toomuch to him”, Fiorina countered.
If 2012 is any guide, polls in the Republican primary could shift wildly even after the primaries begin.
Trumpsaid that Rubio also did well in the debate but dismissed Bush.
Her response to Trump’s previous comments on her appearance – “Ithink women all over this country heard what Mr. Trump said” – and Fiorina’s impassioned speech against the Planned Parenthood fetal organ videos dominated the Twitter debate universe. Walker, who was earlier thought to be a strong contender for the Republicannomination, had been polling around 5 percent.
For Robert Morse, a 67-year-old Republican who attended a Trump town hall meeting Thursday in New Hampshire, the candidate’s vague prescriptions for addressing the nation’s problems are cause for concern.
Fiorina also more than held her own on foreign policy, a central theme of the debate, with specifics regarding such things as the Iran nuclear deal and Russia’s Vladimir Putin.
