NBC to air some live commercials during ‘Hairspray’

It was very hush-hush for a while about in exactly what capacity Lake and Winokur would be returning to Hairspray. Through the decades, the central plot has remained the same: a plucky, plus-sized teen dances her way into the ensemble of a local American Bandstand-style TV show in 1962 and fights racial segregation in her native Baltimore. Emmy Award-winning live television director Alex Rudzinski (“Dancing with the Stars”) will join Tony Award-winning director Kenny Leon (“The Wiz Live!”) for the Dec.7 live telecast.

“Hairpray Live!” will star Harvey Fierstein as Edna Turnblad, the role he played – and won a Tony for – on Broadway.

For Ephraim Sykes who plays Motormouth’s son and Penny’s boyfriend, Seaweed J. Stubbs, it is the flawless time to be doing a new version of “Hairspray”.

“Hairspray Live!”, airing tonight (Wednesday, Dec. 7) on NBC, is a “joyous and amusing show about a young girl who just wants to dance on television”, as NBC boss Bob Greenblatt described it.

How To Watch Hairspray Live! He’s even a veteran of the uniquely nerve-racking pandemonium of live television, having spent seven years working on The Rosie O’Donnell Show. Psyched? We thought so.

That means this time they’re going bigger, adding 500 audience members and moving the production from NY to Universal’s Hollywood back lot.

It has already been through three incarnations – the original 1988 John Waters movie (which was not technically a musical), the 2002 Broadway musical adapted from the 1988 movie, and then the 2007 movie adaptation of the Broadway musical.
