NC Men Charged with Hacking Multiple Government Computer Systems
In connection with a network of computer hackers that allegedly targeted CIA Director John Brennan and other senior government officials, two North Carolina men have been both arrested and charged with the crime.
The suspects were identified as Andrew Otto Boggs, aka “INCURSIO”, 22, of North Wilkesboro and Justin Gray Liverman, aka “D3F4ULT”, 24, of Morehead City on the coast.
On October 21, 2015, shortly after the hack into Brennan’s account became public, the Central Intelligence Agency called the breach “a crime and the Brennan family is the victim”.
The hacker claimed to have broken into Clapper’s home telephone and internet, his personal email, and his wife’s Yahoo email, as well as changing the settings of Clapper’s Verizon FiOS account, according to Motherboard, which first reported the incident.
Earlier this year, British authorities arrested a 16-year-old boy who went by the online name Cracka.
In January and February of 2016, the group hacked the Justice Department’s Civil Division and distributed information it obtained unlawfully.
In court documents, the Crackas with Attitude are accused of using social engineering techniques – which trick people into clicking on sketchy links or downloading malicious malware instead of hacking them with brute force – on senior government officials and their family members. The arrest report from the Federal Bureau of Investigation alleges that Boggs sent a direct message on Twitter to Cracka, saying the group’s goal would “only be hitting governments and security firms”.
The U.S. Department of Justice says members of the group made harassing phone calls to victims and their families, defaced victims’ social media accounts and uploaded private information they got from victims’ personal accounts to public websites.
