NCAA imposes postseason ban on SMU Men’s Basektball program for multiple rule
Southern Methodist has been banned from postseason play after the 2015-16 basketball season.
Brown’s coaching resume is terrific, headlined by the fact he’s the only coach in basketball history to capture both an NBA title and an NCAA title.
The head men’s basketball coach (Brown) failed to report the incident of fraudulent academic credit after it had been brought to his attention, and he initially lied about the underlying violations when interviewed by the enforcement staff.
SMU Mustangs head coach Larry Brown discusses the game during the post game press conference after defeating East Carolina Pirates 77-54 at Moody Coliseum in University Park, Texas, Saturday, January 17, 2015. SMU will also lose nine scholarships over the next three years and be placed on three years’ probation.
Part of the investigation at SMU focused on whether former assistant coach Ulric Maligi and a former basketball administrator helped former McDonald’s All-American Keith Frazier with coursework to become eligible to play at SMU.
Brown was also handed a two year show cause order during which he will be attending the NCAA Regional Rules Seminar.
“SMU is reviewing the full report to determine if the university will appeal any findings and/or penalties”, the school said in a statement.
SMU President R. Gerald Turner and Director of Athletics Rick Hart were scheduled to address the media at 3 p.m. ET and Brown was set to speak at 4:30 p.m., according to the school’s website.
Frazier was ruled ineligible during the latter half of his sophomore campaign in 2014-15 due to academics.
Brown is likely to be suspended 10 games.
Brown accepted responsibility for the punishment Tuesday – marking the third time in his collegiate coaching career his program has been sanctioned by the NCAA. However, the panel noted it did not see a record of steps he took to establish and ensure a culture of compliance within his program.
The penalties levied will ban SMU from the 2016 postseason. He said Brown’s past, and leaving Kansas and UCLA before sanctions hit those programs, were not factors.
“Leading the SMU men’s basketball program is an honor and a responsibility that I take very seriously”, Brown said.
“I’m really disappointed in what happened to our kids”, Brown said at Tuesday afternoon press conference. The other two came while he was coaching UCLA and Kansas.
“I just feel bad for those kids, the kids that i coached”.
