NCW Sends Notice To Kamat For Offensive Remarks Against Smriti Irani
Meanwhile, the National Commission for Women too has jumped into the fray and has issued a notice to Kamat to explain within a week his alleged offensive remarks.
“Hundreds of BJP activists led by president of Mumbai BJP women cell Shalaka Salvi and Mumbai Yuva Morcha president Ganesh Pande held demonstrations outside Mr Kamat’s house to protest against his derogatory remarks against Ms Irani. We have asked him to reply in a week’s time”, said Lalitha Kumaramangalam, chairperson of the National Commission for Women.
The party also asked why these BJP workers were not similarly agitated when Kamat and other Congressmen demanded criminal action against Sushma Swaraj and Vasundhara Raje.
Kamat made the remarks against Irani while campaigning for local body elections in the BJP-ruled state.
“Her (Irani) family’s financial condition was not good; therefore, she worked in a hotel in Versova”. He maintained that he had not said anything about Ms. Irani which she herself had not revealed in interviews in the past few years. “Since, Smriti was only 10th pass, she cleaned tables in the hotel”, he added.
Hitting out at Modi, Kamat said he chose “uneducated” Irani in Council of Minister because of some “self interest”. Sharma counter attacked BJP leaders for assailing Kamat without understanding the contest of his statements. He further said that Irani used to work at a fast food restaurant in Mumbai before beginning her career in modelling. She gained stardom by working in TV serials and the rest is history.
Mr. Kamat, who is in charge of party affairs in Rajasthan and Gujarat, said he had learnt about the notice from media reports and had not received it yet.
