NCW summons Salman Khan next week over ‘rape remark’
On 30 June, the National Commission for Women (NCW) summoned Bollywood actor Salman Khan on 8 July after he failed to apologise for his “raped woman” remark.
The NCW notice was issued after Salman during a media interaction had said that his gruelling workout for “Sultan” left him feeling like a “raped woman”, a remark which evoked a sharp reaction from activists and others. After that, we will make public both his letter to NCW and our decision.
The reply was e-mailed to NCW through Salman’s lawyer on Tuesday evening, while the NCW notice was sent directly to the actor’s residence.
Kumaramangalam had not revealed the details of the letter, but had said that they are studying it. The Maharashtra State Women’s Commission has also issued a summons to the actor, asking for a response on his comment. The letter says that case is already being heard by NCW and hence it would amount to a case of double jeopardy.
“The reply has come from his lawyer, which means it is a legal reply”.
MSCW chief Vijaya Rahatkar called the reasoning ‘baseless, ‘ saying the State panel had concurrent powers and equal authority as the national commission to summon. Following this The Women’s Commission, took suo motu notice and wrote to the actor demanding a public apology within 7 days.
Salman Khan invited the wrath of several women’s groups after his remark in a recent interview comparing himself to a raped woman. “When I used to walk out of the ring, it was actually like a raped woman walking out”.
NCW stands strong on their ground of demanding an apology from the actor over the issue. “I could not walk straight”.
“Udoubtedly what Salman said was wrong…but his intention was not wrong”, Salim Khan said on Twitter last week, and added, “I apologise on behalf of his family and friends…to err is human, but to forgive divine”.
