Nearly two-thirds of UAW members reject Fiat Chrysler deal
As top leadership within the United Auto Workers spent Thursday trying to dissect what went wrong and how to move forward after Fiat Chrysler workers widely rejected a contract proposal earlier this week, labor experts said part of the problem may have been one of messaging.
The next move has yet to be decided.
Total light vehicle sales rose to 174,337 cars and trucks, as Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV, Ford Motor Co and General Motors Co all reported higher Canadian sales for the month.
“We will gather the issues together, notify FCA that further discussions are needed”, Williams said in his statement.
The contract deal was supposed to have served as a template for the UAW’s contracts with two other major USA automakers – General Motors and Ford – which are also up for renewal. FIAT dealers sold 1,133 units of the new crossover last month as greater numbers reached FIAT studios across the country.
The UAW represents 40,000 unionized Fiat Chrysler workers. The UAW agreed to allow lower pay for entry-level workers in 2007 when Detroit automakers were struggling financially.
At UAW Local 1700 in Sterling Heights, 72 percent of production workers and 65 percent of skilled trades workers who cast ballots voted against the contract, according to a person briefed on those results.
“They send the message that they can strike and they can make strikes work, but without putting all their workers out on the street for an extended period”, said Hurd. The posting was quickly followed by another telling union members they are required to participate in the strike by taking different shifts on the picket line. Ford, which has a cap, recently promoted a number of tier-two workers to tier-one wages.
We’re only at the beginning of UAW leaders here in Warren, reconsidering what went wrong with this first tentative agreement.
“Staying focused on core values like initial quality, sales and service satisfaction, cost of ownership, dependability and advanced technology is paying off in higher sales and share, stronger transaction prices and lower incentives”, said Kurt McNeil, GM’s US vice president of Sales Operations.
“While significant progress has been made since the events of less than seven years ago, much more work remains to be done and challenges remain while new, significant ones surface”, the company said. Mo., over a local contract dispute.
Sales at the Volkswagen-owned luxury brand Audi rose 16.2 percent in September, lifting total sales from the two companies to 43,481, about 3,000 vehicles more than expected by the online auto site Edmunds.com. FCA might also need to adjust its plans for a manufacturing upheaval – or at least give a few sort of explicit commitment to preserving U.S. factory jobs.
The proposed agreement would have narrowed a pay gap between first tier workers who make around $28 per hour and second tier workers whose wage is capped at about $19 per hour.
