Need to take the pressure off the manager: Theo Walcott
While Wenger used his post-match conference to berate the referee’s performance, Arsenal’s Spanish right-back took full responsibility for their downfall. We had some very nice goals.
“His attitude is he’s a committed player”, Wenger said of Sanchez.
Juventus head coach Massimiliano Allegri, who has been touted as a possible replacement has categorically denied he is in line to replace Wenger as manager of Arsenal next season.
Rather than simply shutting up shop and ensuring they avoided another embarrassment, Arsenal afforded Bayern swathes of space in the final third. Had Arsenal defended deep and lost the game 2-1 or 3-1 with ten men, this morning’s headlines would not have read “Shame old story”, “Shame again”, “Laughing stock” and “Wenger out”.
“There’s loads of players who are very hurt in the dressing room”.
After Barcelona’s 4-0 mauling at Paris Saint-German and Arsenal’s 5-1 surrender at Bayern Munich, both sides go into the return legs with seemingly impossible tasks.
“I feel that the time has come”, the 2004 Premier League champion told Sport 360. We spoke about it before the game.
“It’s easy to identify things to break it and now it’s broken, there are no players in there that can fix it”. But we were sleeping.
“In the second half obviously we had some issues with Sanchez coming on, but after that we recovered well and deserved three points”. Bayern had made their sixth consecutive Champions League quarterfinal and while Arsenal are left needing a strong look at themselves, Bayern’s sights are firmly set on a spot in the final. You were as naive as a newborn kitten and demonstrated about as much fight. They had 50 very good minutes tonight but it can happen both ways.
Bayern winger Franck Ribery gave a less glowing appraisal of his fellow Frenchman’s current predicament, but he too won’t write off Wenger just yet. “This result can happen in a game that was clearly not a 5-1, if you see the whole the 90 minutes”. The second part of the game was spoiled by the referee.
As much as fans are hurting tonight, you might well assume that the Arsenal dressing room was a sombre place, with hard silences and face etched with shame.
Arsenal’s latest hammering in the Champions League, this time at the hands of Bayern Munich, sent them home at the last 16 stage for the seventh time in seven years.
I get it, of course.
