Neglected horses found with 3-feet-long hooves
Our investigation documented that several horses slated to compete in this year’s Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration have been illegally sored, which could give them an advantage at the industry’s high-profile showcase event starting Wednesday in Shelbyville, Tennessee.
A miniature mare was euthanized because of “ruptured ligaments causing irreparable fetlock dislocation”.
Veterinarian Peter O’Halloran and farrier Kenny Romjue carefully maneuvered Quest, an 18-year-old stallion, as they took X-rays of his overgrown hooves Monday afternoon at the Days End Farm Horse Rescue.
“They were long and spiraled and curled, which shows evidence of likely years of going without proper care”, Gorrie said.
The horses were rescued from the 18’x18′ enclosure on Friday.
Two emaciated horses are recovering after officials say they were found in a stall piled with three to four feet of manure. They said that this is the worst case of hoof neglect they’ve seen in all that time.
Authorities were contacted by a citizen who called the Humane Society of Washington County to report worries about “the welfare of pet pigeons”. “It is standard practice during welfare inspections to check all animals on the property, which is how the horses were discovered”.
Evidence from the investigation has been turned over to the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office.
The Humane Society of the United States released details of an undercover horse abuse investigation Tuesday.
During its 26-year history, Days End Farm Horse Rescue has rescued over 3000 horses and presently has 78 horses in its care. The costs associated with the two new horses are expected to be steep due to the critical rehabilitation care necessary.
