Neil Gorsuch Takes Seat on US Supreme Court
Since President Donald Trump announced his choice to fill the seat that was left vacant when Justice Antonin Scalia died a year ago, observers immediately began speculating how conservative Gorsuch was.
The first was administered earlier that morning by Chief Justice John Roberts with Scalia’s widow and one of his sons attendance, as well as the other eight Supreme Court justices.
“The swearing-in of a United States Supreme Court justice”, President Donald Trump said during a speech ahead of Gorsuch’s public ceremony. He said his now-confirmed nominee to the court will render his judgments “not on his personal preferences but based on a fair and objective reading of the law”.
President Donald Trump nominated Gorsuch on January 31, and the Senate Judiciary Committee held four days of hearings beginning March 20. Last year, he joined with the court’s liberals to strike strict abortion clinic regulations from Texas, and the year before, he wrote the landmark decision making same-sex marriage a constitutional right.
Gorsuch’s confirmation came after a bruising fight that saw Republicans change the rules for approving Supreme Court picks – over the fierce objection of Democrats.
A review by NARF found that Gorsuch’s rulings while on the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals bode well for Indian Country.
Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan took their oaths at the Supreme Court and did not go the White House for a public ceremony.
Mr Gorsuch, who was sworn in by Justice Anthony Kennedy, becomes the 113th justice to serve on the high court.
“The court is back to where it was when Justice Scalia was on it”, said Stephanos Bibas, who runs Penn Law’s Supreme Court Clinic.
Trump also thanked Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell for the moment.
And to the American people, I am humbled by the trust placed in me today.
Trump called Gorsuch’s nomination process “the most transparent and accessible in history”.
More than any appointment in recent memory, Justice Gorsuch’s was tied to the presidential election cycle.
Gorsuch, speaking briefly after the swearing in, used much of his time to thank those who helped him through the process.
Mr Trump noted that Mr Gorsuch’s elevation marked the first time in United States history that a sitting justice and his former clerk were serving on the bench at the same time. And then hopefully they could do it again, and maybe at some point, even get a progressive majority on the court.
On Monday, conservative publications eagerly greeted Neil Gorsuch’s ascendence to the Supreme Court.
After Mr Gorsuch’s nomination last week, Democrats blocked his nomination with a procedural filibuster – the first time in history this has happened.
On April 19, the court will hear a case in which a church argues that Missouri violated the U.S. Constitution’s guarantee of religious liberties by denying the church funds for a playground project to improve playground safety due to a state ban on financial assistance to religious organizations.
