Nelson Mandela’s grandson accused of raping 15-year-old
Nelson Mandela’s grandson, Mbuso, was arrested and charged with rape in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Now in police custody, Mbuso will return to the Johannesburg magistrates’ court on Friday for a bail hearing.
24-year-old Mbuso Mandela is facing a rape case after allegedly assaulting sexually a 15-year-old girl in a restaurant.
Members of the Mandela family were in the cramped courtroom in Johannesburg as Mbuso Mandela appeared in court for the second time over the allegation. He has been in police custody since his arrest on Saturday.
According to The Toronto Sun on August 19, the girl reported that the rape occurred on August 7, but didn’t report this to the police until August 14, 2015.
“Just because they have a famous surname, they think they can get away with crime”, the spokesman said.
Earlier in the day, police spokesman Lungelo Dlamini confirmed that a man was a facing rape charge, but refused to release details before his court appearance.
Mbuso Mandela is one of late statesman Nelson Mandela’s 17 grandchildren.
Meanwhile, the alleged victim’s spokesman also said that a bodyguard of the late president’s ex-wife, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, “went to the family pretending to be a cop”.
“When the father asked to see his badge, he didn’t have one”.
More than four years ago, Madikizela-Mandela and her bodyguards were involved in an altercation with two police officers who pulled over her vehicle for allegedly speeding on the way to a funeral. “It turned out he had been sent by Winnie”, the spokesman told Daily Sunday. The survivor’s family is furious over the way the Mandelas have handled the situation.
The grandson of a prominent struggle icon is expected to apply for bail on Friday morning.
