Nest finally has a new product … but don’t get too excited
As per the company, the Nest Cam Outdoor, unlike other cameras, is always recording and uploading the video on to the cloud.
We weren’t able to test the camera – it won’t be out until the fall – so we’ll have to take Nest’s word for it, but its engineers are very keen on what they claim are intelligent alerts called “People Alerts”.
While Fadell insists that his departure has nothing to do with the negative rumours surrounding his management or the company’s tumultuous acquisition of Dropcam, the world began to wonder why Nest hadn’t released an original product in months. To access the 30-day video recording history of your camera you need to pay £8 per month for your first camera, and another £4pm for every extra.
For the data connection there is no Ethernet option-you just connect the camera to your Wi-Fi. Nest acquired that company for $555 million in 2014, a sale Dropcam founder Greg Duffy later said he regretted. “Nest Cam provides customers with peace of mind and the ability to stay connected to the things they care most about”.
In addition, Nest introduced the redesigned Nest app. A Night Vision mode illuminates the whole scene with eight LED lights. It’s also purportedly easy to install on a variety of surfaces, including wood, brick, and stucco. “This is one of the first cameras to come with two-way audio”, said Nariyawala.
Have you wanted to add a camera to your property for home security, but been anxious intemperate weather might accidentally kill your investment? The real kicker for Nest Aware subscribers, however, is an AI-based feature that allows the camera to identify humans.
What do you think of Nest’s new camera? Meanwhile, the Private Sharing tool will allow people to share password-protected camera feeds.
Nest over the time has been in the news when co-founder and CEO Tony Fadell made a decision to leave the company that he had sold to Google Inc. for $3.2 billion in February 2014.
The Nest Cam Outdoor will be available in the United States now, costing $199 per item (although multi-packs will also be available), and will go on sale in the UK later this year, although there’s no news on a British price just yet. Nest Aware is offered as a 10-day or 30-day subscription for United States dollars 10 or USD 30 per month, respectively.
Nest has also ensured the camera is waterproof enough to survive the elements, although the cameras IP65 rating means it can’t be fully submerged – not that that’s something you’d worry too much about anyway.
