Netflix Acquires Exclusive Streaming Rights for Jane the Virgin and Zoo
The CW series will then become available to all countries that Netflix operates in, except Canada, later in 2015 or 2016.
Season one of “Jane the Virgin”, the telenovela where Golden Globe victor Gina Rodriguez plays a virgin who ends up accidentally pregnant, will launch on Netflix in the United States on October. 12, the same day that season two premieres on the CW network. How much Netflix is paying for the streaming rights to the three shows is not known.
The first season of Zoo is already available in the United States right now and will be able to be streamed in many other Netflix territories in the coming months.
“As we ready to premiere COLONY in January, this deal with Netflix will expand the global audience reach of a show we’re all so proud of right out of the gate”, said Jeff Wachtel, Chief Content Officer, NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment and President, Universal Cable Productions.
Prior to Netflix’s official statement, The New York Times reports that the streaming service has picked up The CW’s Jane The Virgin, CBS’ summer thriller Zoo and USA Network and Legendary TV’s Colony. The series was created by Carlton Cuse (Lost) and Ryan Condal (Hercules) and a co-production of Legendary TV and Universal Cable Productions.
CBS Global Distribution Group president, CEO Armando Nuñez said, “We’re excited to partner with Netflix around the world for these two excellent, CBS-produced series”.
Set in the very near future, COLONY centers on one family’s struggle to survive and bring liberty back to the people of an occupied Los Angeles.
Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos said, “We’re thrilled to offer our members these hit CBS series”.
HTGAWM has gathered a rather large following from just its first season alone, and with the second season having premiered last week, it is a pretty good acquisition for Netflix.
“Zoo” is based on the novel by James Patterson about a wave of violent animal attacks against humans that sweeps the planet. “In this age of new business models and innovative windowing, this unprecedented access to worldwide viewers is an extraordinarily positive sign in the right direction to grow the series as a long-term asset for our studio”.
