Presented and voted on by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the annual Golden Globe Awards recognize excellence in film and television, both domestic and foreign. Meanwhile, FOX’s “Empire” manages to get nominated for best drama series against HBO’s “Game of Thrones”, USA’s “Mr. Robot”, Netflix’s “Narcos”, and Starz’s “Outlander”.
The film – starring Blanchett as a housewife who falls for a store clerk played by Rooney Mara – earned five nominations, including for best motion picture drama and for its two star actresses.
Some 10 movies later, she is seen as a front-runner for Oscar glory for playing a young woman who is torn between two men on the opposite sides of the Atlantic in “Brooklyn”.
In the season’s crowded field of contenders – and with “The Force Awakens” threatening box office obliteration – attention from the Globes was very much welcomed Thursday. “A massive thank you to @ScreenActors for the nomination”. Although Thursday’s announcements featured plenty of films that pushed boundaries in form and content, they also suggested that, if 2015 can be described in one phrase, it would be a return to simple, unadorned classicism. Ruffalo, however, was nominated for best actor in a comedy for his performance as a bipolar father in “Infinitely Polar Bear”.
Alicia Vikander – Nominee for Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama “The Danish Girl” and Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture “Ex-Machina”: “I am truly thrilled and grateful to the HFPA for both these wonderful nominations!” Because the film was also released in theaters for a limited run, Beasts of No Nation is also up for other traditional industry awards (here’s looking at you, Oscars).
Tied with four is the Aaron Sorkin-scripted box-office disappointment “Steve Jobs”. It’s classic Golden Globes to nominate her-since her attendance at the show will made headlines and bring in viewers.
Entertainment website Moviefone.com called Quaid “the John Travolta of 2106 Golden Globe Pronounciations” likening his slip to Travolta’s introduction of “Wicked” singer Idina Menzel as “Adele Dazeem” at the 2014 Oscars ceremony. But its ensemble cast is struggling to stand out from the pack. “The best picture nomination really speaks to that”.
Ennio Morricone: “I am deeply honored and grateful to receive this nomination on the eve of the European premiere of “The Hateful Eight” here in London”. That’s the wonderful thing about actors.
Best actor in a TV series- comedy nods are Indian-American Aziz Ansari (‘Master of None’), Gael Garcia Bernal (‘Mozart in the Jungle’), Rob Lowe (‘The Grinder’), Patrick Stewart (‘Blunt Talk’) and Jeffrey Tambor (‘Transparent’). PBS’ “Downton Abbey”, CBS’ “The Good Wife”, Netflix’s “House of Cards” were all Globe drama series nominees last year, but not this year. The haul for “Mad Max” also included a nod for best director for George Miller.
And Room, based on Emma Donoghue’s novel about a mother and son held captive in a small space, is proving itself the little movie that could in terms of awards season.
Carlow actress Saoirse Ronan and Kerry actor Michael Fassbender lead the charge in the Irish nominations, alongside Lenny Abrahamson who directed “Room“, which will be represented in three categories at the prestigious awards next January.
SNUB: Blythe Danner, “I’ll See You in My Dreams” The scene where Danner gets high in this Sundance indie is hysterical enough for her to deserve recognition in the best actress in a comedy. Musical or comedy: Casual (Hulu), Mozart in the Jungle (Amazon), Orange is the New Black (Netflix), and last year’s victor, Transparent (Amazon).
The nominees for best animated feature film: “Anomalisa, ” “Inside Out, ” “The Good Dinosaur, ” “The Peanuts Movie, ” and “Shaun the Sheep Movie”.
