Netflix Beats HBO, Traditional Broadcasters With The Most Golden Globe Noms
Shows distributed by Netflix and Amazon combined to receive dozens of nominations, and for the first time, Hulu scored a significant nod of its own, thanks to Casual’s presence among the nominees for Best Television Series – Comedy or Musical.
The film – starring Blanchett as a housewife who falls for a store clerk played by Rooney Mara – earned five nominations, including for best motion picture drama and for its two star actresses.
The Best Motion Picture – Drama category has “Mad Max: Fury Road”, “The Revenant ” and “Spotlight” in competition with “Carol”, whereas the Best Director – Motion Picture trophy contenders include Alejandro G Inarritu (“The Revenant”), Tom McCarthy (“Spotlight”), Ridley Scott (“The Martian”) and George Miller (“Mad Max: Fury Road”) apart from Haynes. Contrary to the cancel-out dynamics of the “Spotlight” ensemble, the HFPA managed to nominate both actors – in the less competitive comedy category, but still. Originally slated for release next year, its late jump into awards season was rewarded with four nominations, including best picture, comedy, and nods for Steve Carell and Christian Bale. And for the Best Original Score – Motion Picture trophy, “Carol” is in the race with “The Danish Girl”, “The Hateful Eight”, “Steve Jobs” and “The Revenant”.
And despite generating Oscar buzz and picking up Golden Globe nominations for best picture, best screenplay and best director, the ensemble cast for Boston Globe investigation drama “Spotlight” came up empty.
This streaming favoritism was visible throughout the acting categories as well, with Aziz Ansari and Gael Garcia Bernal both picking up nominations for comedy actor (for Netflix’s “Master of None” and Amazon’s “Mozart in the Jungle”, respectively) and Lily Tomlin for comedy actress for “Grace and Frankie” (Netflix). The other drama nominees besides “Empire” are Starz’s “Outlander”, Netflix’s “Narcos”, USA’s “Mr. Robot”, and HBO’s “Game of Thrones”.
Since 1995, the SAG Awards have been a major Hollywood award event; they are the only major awards show that honor only actors, and are voted on by fellow actors, who are members of the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists group. Ben Mendelsohn, who was just snubbed for a SAG award nomination, of Bloodline was nominated for Best Supporting Actor in a TV series, limited series or TV movie.
Kate Blanchett stars in the movie that was nominated for 5 awards in the 2016 Golden Globes.
Irish-Canadian author Emma Donoghue was the only Canuck to pick up a nomination this year. Only Rachel McAdams got a nomination for supporting actress.
Even pay-cable network HBO, which traditionally ruled at awards time, has been humbled by this year’s digital invasion.
Leonardo DiCaprio for “The Revenant”, Eddie Redmayne for “The Danish Girl”, Michael Fassbender for “Steve Jobs”, Will Smith for “Concussion” and Bryan Cranston for “Trumbo”.
– Actress, Movie or Limited Series: Kirsten Dunst, “Fargo”; Lady Gaga, “American Horror Story: Hotel”; Sarah Hay, “Flesh & Bone”; Felicity Huffman, “American Crime”; Queen Latifah, “Bessie”.
Also nominated in that category was Saoirse Ronan for “Brooklyn”, a 1950s tale about immigration. This photo offered by Netflix shows, Idris Elba within the Netflix original film, Beasts of No Nation.
