Netflix Beats Out Traditional Cable Broadcasters To Rack Up Golden Globe Nominations
There are always snubs and surprises when the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) and the Screen Actors Guild announce their nominations for the annual Golden Globe Awards and the SAG Awards, respectively.
Veteran actress Charlotte Rampling has been a big part of the best actress conversation for her work in the affecting marital drama “45 Years”, but was locked out of the best actress, drama category, possibly because Rooney Mara and Cate Blanchett were both nominated as leads in “Carol”. Along with “Carol” and “The Revenant”, they are: “Mad Max: Fury Road”, “Room” and “Spotlight”.
Steve Carrell- Nominee for Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy “The Big Short”: “Thank you Hollywood Foreign Press”. It got nominations for best comedy picture. Chances are that the Globe will go to the more widely accessible Spotlight or Carol, but the director prize is very much a toss-up between Miller, Carol’s Todd Haynes, and Spotlight’s Tom McCarthy.
Wise words: Nominating the hilarious, informative, challenging “The Big Short”, opening tomorrow, for both Best Original Screenplay and Best Picture, Musical/Comedy, is a rare vote for movies that are actually amusing and smart.
Kate Winslet, best supporting actress for “Steve Jobs”: “I am completely over the moon and feel so honoured to be nominated for a Golden Globe by the HFPA for this film”.
While there’s no doubt Aziz Ansari has had us laughing since “Master of None” first debuted on Netflix, few would have expected him to get a Best Actor nod for his work in the freshman series, especially given how many buzzed-about stars seemed like locks for the category – including “Transparent’s” Jeffery Tambor, who did indeed make the list alongside Ansari. All five of FX’s nominations came from limited series “Fargo” and “American Horror Story: Hotel”, while three of PBS’s four nods were for “Wolf Hall”; HBO earned almost as many nominations from niche miniseries and TV movies (“Show Me a Hero”, “Nightingale”, and “Bessie”) as it did from more mainstream offerings (“Game of Thrones”, “Silicon Valley”, and “Veep”). Mark Ruffalo is up for Best Actor in the Comedy Or Musical category, too – for his performance as a husband and father struggling profoundly with bipolar disorder in Infinitely Polar Bear.
The double Vikander: Rising star Alicia Vikander had a ton of movies this year, and she earned her nominations for Best Actress, Drama (“The Danish Girl”) and Best Supporting Actress (“Ex Machina”). Dunst was nominated for a Golden Globe award for best actress in a series or TV movie for her role on Thursday, Dec. 10, 2015…
All of the nominees for the best comedy series Golden Globe are for cable or streaming shows. – Rami Malek on his family’s response to his nomination for best actor in a TV drama for “Mr. Robot”. Sylvester Stallone earned a well-deserved supporting nod for “Creed”, but star Michael B. Jordan was snubbed. Netflix even locked in a film nomination this year for “Beasts of No Nation” actor Idris Elba. The SAGs nominated her for Supporting Actress for “Danish Girl”, but here, she’s a lead.
House Of Cards – Past Globes victor Robin Wright landed a nomination but the ground-breaking Netflix political drama itself lost out – and nothing for Kevin Spacey either, even with a SAG Awards nom yesterday. The others in the category were Michael Fassbender (“Steve Jobs”), Eddie Redmayne (“The Danish Girl”) and Bryan Cranston (“Trumbo”). Perhaps, in a couple years, the Globes’ movie categories will be similarly saturated with flicks distributed by streaming platforms.
The winners will be announced in an awards ceremony set for January 10 that will air live on NBC with Ricky Gervais as host.
