Netflix dominates Golden Globe field
USA Network’s cult conspiracy show “Mr. Robot” took the TV categories by storm with unexpected nominations for the show and actors Rami Malek and Christian Slater.
Streaming video giant Netflix NFLX proves once again its impact on television with nominees on both lists for its series Narcos, Bloodline, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Grace and Frankie, Daredevil, Master of None, House of Cards, and Orange is the New Black (its first feature film Beasts of No Nation also received recognition in the film categories).
According to Vanity Fair, Stallone’s nomination “neatly bookends” his only other Golden Globe nomination in 1977 for the original “Rocky” film.
One thing hasn’t changed about the Hollywood Foreign press, comprised of some 70 to 80 reporters from far flung places, which is that they love big movie stars and they love to party with them on their one big night.
The nominees were revealed Thursday, and the winners will be announced at a televised ceremony in Los Angeles on January 10.
Sylvester Stallone got a nomination, for Creed.
SNUB: Tom Hardy, “The Revenant” The $135 million epic directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu earned four nominations at the Globes, including best picture, director and actor (Leonardo DiCaprio).
Kate Winslet, best supporting actress for “Steve Jobs”: “I am completely over the moon and feel so honoured to be nominated for a Golden Globe by the HFPA for this film”. This has been a bad week for Keaton, who also didn’t receive a SAG nomination, which casts doubt on the early season prediction that the “Batman”/”Birdman” star would finally win an Oscar.
“Carol”, starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, is expected to turn big winners as the period drama has won five nominations, including two under the name of the lead actors.
Besides those three, the only star who get a double nomination is Alicia Vikander.
Speaking after the nominations were announced, he said: “I am incredibly grateful to the HFPA for having included me in such a brilliant troupe of actors. This is a real honour for a waitress/singer/actress from NY!” Quentin Tarantino (The Hateful Eight) didn’t make the director list, either.
Don’t cry too much for Ruffalo, however: He picked up a nomination for best actor in a comedy and musical for his performance in Infinitely Polar Bear. One for “Best Television Limited Series” and a nominee for newcomer Lady Gaga who was given the “Best Actress in a Miniseries” nomination.
It will compete with blockbuster space adventure “The Martian”, Melissa McCarthy caper “Spy”, coming-of-age comedy “Trainwreck” and “Joy”, inspired by the story of the woman who designed the household Miracle Mop. The others in the category were Michael Fassbender (“Steve Jobs”), Eddie Redmayne (“The Danish Girl”) and Bryan Cranston (“Trumbo”).
The comedies have performed better at the box office, though the Academy Awards have been generally unfriendly toward the genre. Everyone is glad to see him back in the game.
Alicia Vikander, the ubiquitous star of 2015, joined the best dramatic actress field for Tom Hooper’s transgender period drama “The Danish Girl”, as well as the supporting actress nominees for her performance as an artificial intelligence in the sci-fi indie “Ex Machina”.
