Netflix dominates Golden Globe nods for streaming services, but others gaining ground
Netflix’s Narcos was also nominated for best television series in the drama category.
Reporters and industry insiders are gathering at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California, for the announcement of nominees for the Golden Globe Awards.
It will compete with blockbuster space adventure “The Martian”, Melissa McCarthy caper “Spy”, coming-of-age comedy “Trainwreck” and “Joy”, inspired by the story of the woman who designed the household Miracle Mop.
The Globes nominations were announced a day after the Screen Actors Guild award contenders.
In the category for best actress in a drama, apart from Blanchett and Mara, Brie Larson was nominated for her portrayal of a mother held captive with her young son in “Room“, and Alicia Vikander earned a nod for her role alongside Eddie Redmayne in “The Danish Girl“, a film about transgender pioneer Lili Elbe.
The Golden Globe nominees for best motion picture drama are: “Carol”, “Mad Max: Fury Road”, “The Revenant”, “Room“, and “Spotlight“. It has seven nominations, down from 15 past year. Only Jon Hamm, in the dramatic actor category, was saluted. Year to date, the stock is up by nearly 152%, while in the last one month, it is up by over 9%.
The most nominations for any show was three, scored by USA’s quirky thriller “Mr. Robot” along with ABC’s prestige drama “American Crime”, FX’s “Fargo”, Starz’ “Outlander”, PBS’ miniseries “Wolf Hall” and the much-honored Amazon comedy “Transparent”.
In the best foreign movie category, four European films and one from Latin America made the cut – “The Brand New Testament” (Belgium/France/Luxembourg), “The Club” (Chile), “The Fencer (Finland/Germany/Estonia), “Mustang” (France) and “Son of Saul” (Hungary)”. In the acting prize, Idris Elba, Mark Rylance, and Lily Tomlin who have already gotten a nod each in movie category add another to their collection in TV department. The big victor, most filmgoers and observers could agree, was audacity itself, as two equally bold sensibilities got the visibility and box office business that, without awards chatter, would otherwise have eluded them.
This also reflects that Netflix’s move of getting deeper into production of its original program is paying off. It is likely that as Netflix will continue to expand its original content base, it will develop more prestigious foothold in the award nominations.
Ricky Gervais will return as host for the Globes when it airs on NBC on January 10.
