Netflix, Inc. and Amazon Dominates Golden Globe Nominations
Monaghan actress Caitriona Balfe also garnered a nomination for Best Actress in a Television Series (Drama) for her role in “Outlander”, as did Eva Green for “Penny Dreadful”, which is filmed in Ireland. This time the film landed a “Best Picture- Drama” and “Best Director” nomination for George Miller. And NBC, the network broadcasting the Golden Globes from Beverly Hills on January 10, was entirely left out in the cold.

A year ago around this time, the 2015 Golden Globes nominations were announced, with “Boyhood” and “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)” the clear frontrunners in the awards-season sweepstakes. No clear favorite has emerged, though a few films have become mandatory viewing – “Carol” (five nominations), “The Revenant” (four nominations) and “The Big Short” (four nominations). This film, and working with Danny Boyle and our incredible cast, has been one of the most creative and awesome experiences of my professional life.
The singer isn’t the only star who’s taken to Twitter to discuss their nomination. Although Academy voters are said to like the Steve Spielberg thriller set during the Cold War, the actors race is too competitive this year with DiCaprio (“The Revenant”), Michael Fassbender (“Steve Jobs”), Eddie Redmayne (“The Danish Girl”), Bryan Cranston (“Trumbo”) and Smith (“Concussion”), who all received Golden Globe nominations.
Netflix led the pack with eight total nominations, beating awards titan HBO, which racked up seven nods.
But the sheer number of Globe nominations didn’t necessarily establish hard-and-fast front-runners. The Martian, the hit film about an astronaut stranded on Mars, picked up three nods, but they were big ones: best comedy or musical, star Matt Damon and director Ridley Scott.
Yes, the Golden Globes have earned a rather goofy reputation, but you can’t accuse them of just copying last year’s list with a tweak here and there, the way it often feels like the Emmys do. She got a lead actress – drama nomination for “The Danish Girl” as expected, but she also scored a supporting nod for “Ex Machina”. “This film is such a special one to me, and I am thrilled to be recognized for my work as ‘Bessie'”.
Apart from “Carol”, the other best motion picture drama nominees are “Mad Max: Fury Road”, “The Revenant”, harrowing kidnap tale “Room” and “Spotlight”, which recounts the Boston Globe’s investigation into sex abuse in the Catholic Church.
Another big contender would be The Big Short, directed by Adam McKay, that received nominations for Best Motion Picture and Best Screenplay.
On the TV side, they’re still playing games with definitions, classifying the ongoing shows Luther, Fargo and American Horror Story as miniseries so they can nominate Idris Elba, Patrick Wilson, Kirsten Dunst and Lady Gaga for acting awards. Year to date, the stock is up by nearly 152%, while in the last one month, it is up by over 9%. In the Comedy category, Joy, Spy’and The Martian won nominations.
