Netflix series ‘Making of a Murderer’ draws big following
Hundreds of thousands of people backing a campaign asking Barack Obama to pardon convicted murderer Steven Avery look set to be disappointed.
Richard and Demos have said before they believe the Avery verdict seemed to be a compromise between jurors – he was found guilty of first-degree murder, but innocent of mutilating the body. Whether it’s merely leaving unpleasant reviews on Yelp or starting petitions to free Avery, viewers of the series have become as enraged by the lack of justice for Avery as they are enraptured by the show. In the series, another juror (who had to be excused from service because of a family emergency as deliberations began) expressed similar doubts as to Avery’s guilt.
The Change.org petition states that signers are “outraged with the injustices which have been allowed to compound and left unchecked” in Avery’s case.
Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey are both now serving life jail terms in the United States for the murder of a woman in 2005.
“They told us really that they were afraid that if they held out for a mistrial that it would be easy to identify which juror had done that and that they were fearful for their own safety”, Demos said.
Two online petitions demanding the pardon of Steven Avery, the subject of the popular Netflix series Making a Murderer, have together received 100,000 signatures, just two weeks after the documentary premiered online. The juror also stated that they believed Avery deserved a retrial. Manitowoc County remains confident in the conviction of Steven Avery for the murder of Tersea Halbach. It focuses on Halbach’s homicide and raises questions about the strength of the cases against Steven Avery and his nephew, Brendan Dassey.
Ken Kratz, the special prosecutor in the case, told People that the filmmakers omitted key evidence.
It’s unknown what impact Making a Murderer will have on Avery and Dassey’s ongoing legal battles.
But two years later, as he was pursuing a $36 million lawsuit against police, he was charged with the murder of photographer Teresa Halbach, who disappeared after being scheduled to visit his home.
