Netflix to Be ‘Star Trek’ Streaming Central
CBS’s new Star Trek TV series which was set to premiere on the network’s digital subscription network CBS All Access in January 2017, will also – thankfully – be available to stream on Netflix in 188 countries 24 hours after the original airing, Netflix announced today.
“The launch of the new “Star Trek” will truly be a global television event”. The episodes will be streamed within 24 hours of their USA premiere. The network confirmed last November that the show would debut in January 2017 on CBS, followed by a rollout in the USA on CBS All Access, the network’s digital subscription video on demand and livestreaming service. The series will be produced by CBS Television Studios in association with Kurtzman’s Secret Hideout, Fuller’ Living Dead Guy Productions and Roddenberry Entertainment. The inclusion of the older catalog will also be available to Netflix subscribers in the US and Canada.
In addition, all 727 episodes of Star Trek will hit Netflix around the world by the end of the year with full seasons of The Original Series, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager and Enterprise hitting the service. Kurtzman is co-writer and producer of the blockbuster films “Star Trek” and “Star Trek Into Darkness”.
Hemsworth played the cameo role in Abrams’ first Star Trek film in 2009, only appearing in the opening scene of the film which depicted George Kirk’s infamous death on the day of his son’s birth. CBS is calling the deal an opportunity for fans around the world to watch the new series “virtually at the same time as viewers in the U.S”.
Netflix says it has about 81 million subscribers in 190 countries, more than half of them based in the US.
This will see its return to television for the first time since 2005 – with a new ship, new characters and new missions.
