Nets fire head coach Hollins, reassign manager King
The Nets sit at 10-27 and have lost four games in a row. The Nets reassigned their general manager and fired coach Lionel Hollins on Sunday in the midst of their worst season since moving from New Jersey.
Brooklyn Nets forward Thomas Robinson (41) defends San Antonio Spurs forward LaMarcus Aldridge (12) in the second half of an NBA basketball game, Monday, Jan. 11, 2016, in NY.
“I’ll take full responsibility for the state of this team”, Prokhorov said.
“[Sunday] was a little bittersweet”, Brown said.
If Prokhorov is ashamed about the reality of what his bold moves brought Brooklyn, he did not show it. Nor did he show a commitment to a more patient, measured approach. San Antonio has been relevant for almost 20 years because of great players, certainly, but also because the teams doesn’t lose sight of the future for short sided goals.
“I hope next season, championship contender”, he said.
The timing of both decisions really came out of nowhere, with most of the Nets staff learning of the decision either through media reports or text messages from outside the team. He answered numerous questions by mentioning the franchise’s new Brooklyn training facility, which is scheduled to open in February, and their D-League club (the Long Island Nets), which will start competing next season.
He made reference to the state-of-the-art Barclays Center, the new practice facility, the new D-League team and the cap space next summer. “He’s our best low-post scorer that we have, so that was key for us”, Dudley said…. “For me. That was a very important lesson”. “I am all in”.
Since purchasing the Nets in 2010, Mikhail Prokhorov has been described as an absentee owner who makes infrequent trips from Moscow, Russia, to see his team in Brooklyn.
Kathy Willens/AP Tony Brown makes his debut as Nets head coach and suffers a blowout loss to the Spurs. He’ll go out and do it the way he thinks is best to do it and he won’t apologize for it. And it works. Calipari continually denies that he will leave Kentucky, but at the right price Calipari could end up with the Nets. So we’re not in a hurry. “We put a lot of names on [our] list”.
Prokhorov took the blame for the Nets’ poor play and called for a “small reset”. Brown told his team that every player should be ready at all times. But at no point did Prokhorov express a desire to change his aggressive strategy. “This is my own personal opinion is I thought they were playing well”, Stevens said.
With the Nets clearly looking to re-invent themselves, things could get interesting in the next six months, even if it’s unclear who is calling the shots today.
“And for us it’s important to go further”, Prokhorov said.
