Nets’ Jarrett Jack: Posts team-high 28 points Saturday
The rescue team had plenty of soldiers, from Curry giving the Warriors their first lead, late in the fourth quarter, to Iguodala hitting a clutch 3-pointer with 5.9 seconds left in regulation, essentially sending the game into OT, to Green’s triple-double after near-misses in two of the three previous games.
Despite the Brooklyn Nets eventual loss to the Golden State Warriors last night in Oakland, their overall level of play throughout the game showed signs of life in what has been an otherwise gloomy season. The Warriors remain undefeated at 11-0.
The Warriors won despite a 13-of-31 shooting from the field by star point guard Stephen Curry, who led all scorers with 34 points.
Brooklyn led 36-21 on 68 percent shooting after the first quarter before the Warriors recovered.
“I think our tank was on empty emotionally and physically”, Nets coach Lionel Hollins said of the overtime that immediately followed Lopez’s miss. Thompson did not play against Brooklyn, and surely it was a factor in the Warriors’ needing overtime to beat a team that came in 1-8. Curry was last year’s MVP voted on by sports analysts, while National Basketball Association players picked James Harden.
The hope was to get Curry the ball, but understanding that the Nets were keying on him defensively, it was up to Draymond Green to take the inbounds and make a decision. “Chef Curry” isn’t just spicing things up; he’s on fire. For all the 11-0 Warriors have accomplished to start the season, it would have been a mighty bitter pill to swallow. Sam Mitchell said it best during his TNT interview during the quarter break prior to the fourth frame: “We’re getting good shots; we’re just not making them”. Jerryd Bayless also had 17 points and Giannis Antetokounmpo added 16 points and 11 rebounds.
Despite their 17 point projected margin of victory, the Warriors still have room to improve, especially against a Brooklyn team that has an incentive to make this game tough after giving up a monster 40 point effort to a clearly motivated DeMarcus Cousins, who, on Friday night, seemed to have put all of the drama from earlier in the week into a dominant performance.
“I told the guys during the first timeout that we were fine”, he said.
Still, they’ve had several chances to get wins and failed to finish. The Nets are one of the league’s best teams at taking the league’s most inefficient shot.
“We feel like we should have had this one”, Lopez said. This is what happened in overtime: 10 straight points from the Warriors to finish with a 107-99 win.
Suns 105, Nuggets 81: PHOENIX – Eric Bledsoe scored 30 points to lead Phoenix, which led by as many as 37 points in the second half.
A big part of that was Green clamping down on Young, but the real tone-setter defensively was Andrew Bogut, who had by far his best game of the season with 10 points, 18 rebounds, four assists, three blocks and two steals.
After draining his third 3-point shot of the night Saturday against the Nets, Curry passed his father, Dell Curry, for 42nd on the all-time list with 1,246 3-pointers made.
