Nevada 35, New Mexico 17
Nevada’s Jordan Dobrich recovered the ball in the end zone. That made the rating 21-17, however Nevada would then go on to attain 14 unanswered factors to complete out the game. The Wolf Pack rushed for 351 yards, while the Lobos only picked up 273 total yards on offense.
Just when the contest was in doubt, Nevada put its foot down.
A – The Pack suffered a devastating loss last week but bounced back with its best game of the season.
On Nevada’s subsequent possession, Stewart was sacked and stripped of the ball, resulting in a 77-yard fumble return for a landing by New Mexico cornerback Nias Martin. The Wolf Pack faced adversity after last week’s loss in the Battle for the Fremont Cannon, but the team responded in a big way.
Rather than running sweeps and counters into the teeth of UNM blitzes and stunts, Nevada running backs Don Jackson and James Butler got to the line of scrimmage as quickly as possible – darting past blitzing defenders and roaming through an underpopulated secondary. Defensive coordinator Scott Boone did a great job scheming against New Mexico’s triple-option and Nevada held the Lobos 155 rushing yards below their average.
The game kicks off at Mackay Stadium at 4 p.m. The play put Nevada ahead 35-17 and clinched Nevada’s first MW victory of the season.
Nevada run defense won’t be able to keep the Lobo ground attack in check. Nevada’s thorough performance against the Lobos re-established its pursuit for a title in the Mountain West and will have the Wolf Pack once again feeling confident about its abilities. The game will be broadcast digitally on ESPN3.
New Mexico also participated in an in-state rivalry game last week and came up victorious, knocking off New Mexico State, 38-29, to improve to 3-2 on the season.
