Nevada among states outlawing guns for domestic abusers
St. Louis Democrat Rep. Stacey Newman’s bill would ban those convicted of domestic violence or sexual offenses from possessing guns, as well as those with protective orders against them. The national total is an undercount because not all law enforcement agencies report such information, and it doesn’t include children and other bystanders who were killed.
PORTLAND, Maine (AP) _ Lawmakers of different political stripes put aside their differences in Maine to strengthen restrictions on gun ownership for people convicted of domestic violence crimes.
Advocates for domestic violence victims in Virginia are praising a rare compromise in Richmond that could shepherd into law a measure that would strip abusers of their gun rights.
A proposal to keep firearms out of the hands of domestic abusers appears to have little chance in Missouri. He pointed to Federal Bureau of Investigation data that found that more than half of women slain with guns in the U.S.in 2011 were killed by intimate partners or family members. Those provisions were included in a larger pro-gun bill.
In 2009, Maryland enacted a law requiring a judge to order firearms to be confiscated from people who have final protective orders filed against them for as long as the order is in effect.
Judges would be required to inform domestic violence abusers they are prohibited from possessing firearms, under a measure coming before Maryland lawmakers.
Of the 31 killings from 2006 to 2014, two victims were men. The six states with higher death tolls are more heavily populated (Texas, California, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and North Carolina).
“We’ve got a caucus in the Legislature that’s going to fiercely defend the Second Amendment”, Richardson said.

Hollie Ayers is pushing for a Pennsylvania law that would require people to turn over their guns when judges issue protection orders against them.

Republican Gov. Bobby Jindal signed a law in 2014 that prohibits firearm possession for those convicted of “domestic abuse battery” for 10 years after the completion of the sentence. The NRA stayed neutral after negotiating language that allows individuals to seek the return of their weapons once restraining orders are lifted. “South Carolina is thinking about strengthening the survivor”. But the professor said in an interview that judges might continue using the “catch-all” until a more emphatic decision is issued.
