Nevada deputy killed in line of duty; suspect also dead
On their way to the scene, deputies found an injured woman.
A Carson City Sheriff’s deputy was shot and killed early Saturday while responding to a domestic battery report in the east side of the capital. Within minutes, a man came out of the home and opened fire on officers.
Additional officers responded and removed three children from the house.
The suspect was later found dead inside the house.
The Sheriff’s Office has turned the investigation over to the Reno Police Department.
News 4 spoke with several neighbors in the area, many say their neighborhood is usually very quiet and this tragedy has shocked the entire community.
“It was chaotic, the police were coming from everywhere”, Scott Harper, one of the witnesses, said to MyNews4. Broadway says there were no other injuries.
No further details were immediately available. It is not clear how the suspect died.
This appears to be the first time a Carson City sheriff’s deputy has been shot and killed on duty since 1867.
A candlelight vigil for the fallen deputy was held at 8pm Saturday by the Peace Officer Memorial just outside the Nevada State Legislature.
In a statement, Gov. Brian Sandoval said: “The Nevada family lost one of its finest public servants today”.
