Nevada GOP Candidates React to Trump Feud with Vet’s Family
Republican U.S. Presidential nominee Donald Trump attends a campaign event at the Greater Columbus Convention Center in Columbus, Ohio August 1, 2016.
The couple agreed that the best apology for Trump’s actions would be for his supporters to repudiate him.
Celeste Zappala, who also signed the letter, said the grief that Gold Star families suffer earns them the right to say whatever they want. A similar request was reportedly circulated in the House of Representatives.
“Mr. Trump has made a firestorm happen that didn’t need to happen and that insults everybody who served”, said Zappala, of Philadelphia. Wasinger refused to comment when contacted by telephone.
Khan continued by saying they were also patriotic American Muslims with undivided loyalty to their country.
Meredith said she hadn’t wept over her son’s death for a long time, but the Republican presidential nominee “ripped the wounds right open again”.
In a convention speech delivered with his wife at his side, Khizr Khan showcased his son’s military service and criticized Trump’s call for a temporary ban on Muslims from entering the United States, holding up a copy of the U.S. Constitution and suggesting Trump read it. And I think he was attacked the other day – he was attacked viciously – and by the way, that’s politics.
His counterpart on the House Armed Services Committee, Representative Mac Thornberry of Texas, echoed McCain, saying in a statement he was “dismayed at the attacks Khizr and Ghazala Khan have endured after they spoke about their son’s service and sacrifice”.
Khan then told Trump to go to the Arlington National cemetery and see that there were soldiers buried there of every ethnicity.
“I can not emphasize enough how deeply I disagree with Mr. Trump’s statement”, said Arizona Sen.
“Election year or not, the VFW will not tolerate anyone berating a Gold Star family member for exercising his or her right of speech or expression”, said Brian Duffy, of Louisville, Ky., who was elected July 27 to lead the nation’s oldest and largest major war veterans organization. “The notion that he would attack a Gold Star family that had made suck extraordinary sacrifices on behalf of our country, the fact that he doesn’t appear to have basic knowledge around critical issues in Europe, in the middle east, in Asia means that he’s woefully unprepared to do this job”. Harry Reid, was on duty with the Army Reserves and was unavailable for comment, according to his campaign.
Khan stated that his son wanted to be a military lawyer, but sacrificed his life to save the lives of his fellow soldiers. Trump said over the weekend he had also made sacrifices in his life by working hard, creating jobs and being successful.
Trump’s comments about the Khans drew criticism from members of his own party. “Trump hasn’t even been in there to do anything yet, so I back Trump up 100 percent”. As for Trump’s response, Neiberger-Miller said she found it “very disturbing and distasteful”.
Joseph Newton served in the 101st Airborne and insists that while he supports the dead, it’s not Trump’s fault that Captain Khan died, and so the attack on Trump is unwarranted. His sacrifice-and that of Khizr and Ghazala Khan-should always be honored. Khan spoke directly to Donald Trump, saying “You are asking Americans to trust you with their future”. Khan said that if it had been up to Donald Trump, his son would have never had the chance to be an American. Trump said Monday on Twitter. Ghazala Khan responded Sunday with an op-ed in the Washington Post, saying that the reason she didn’t speak about her son was because she was in pain.
On Sunday, Democratic rival Clinton said Trump had scapegoated the parents. Pence ended his statement by saying that Trump would support the military and their families. Arizona Sen. John McCain, a prisoner of war in Vietnam, said that while the party has bestowed upon Trump the nomination, “it is not accompanied by unfettered license to defame those who are the best among us”. “That kind decency you mock as ‘political correctness'”.
