New Bihar MLAs faces criminal charges
Bihar has more MLAs with serious criminal charges in the Assembly this time compared to 2010 with the number of such leaders seeing a rise from 76 to 98.
According to private election watchdog Association for Democratic Rights (ADR), 40 per cent or 98 out of 243 MLAs have serious criminal charges like murder.
Charges have been framed against 70 members with criminal background, it said.
Lalu Prasad Yadav’s Rashtriya Janata Dal, which emerged as the largest single party in the Bihar assembly with 80 seats, has 49 MLAs with criminal cases pending against them.
The analysis showed that 11 MLAs, including four from RJD, have declared cases related to murder while 29 have declared cases related to attempt to murder. The Janata Dal (United), which was RJD’s partner in the Bihar elections, has 37 MLAs with criminal antecedents.
Among MLAs facing serious charges, 12 have been charged for murder, 26 are charged for attempt to murder, nine are charged for kidnapping and 13 face extortion charges. Gulab Yadav, RJD MLA from Jhanjharpur constituency has declared 1 case related to rape (IPC Section- 376) against him. Ten MLAs have kidnapping cases pending against them. Out of 228 MLAs analysed during Bihar 2010 assembly elections, 45 (20%) MLAs were crorepatis. 51 (64%) out of 80 MLAs from RJD, 53 (75%) out of 71 MLAs from JD(U), 32 (60%) out of 53 MLAs from BJP, 19 (70%) out of 27 MLAs from INC, 1 (50%) out of 2 MLAs of Rashtriya Lok Samta Party, 2 (100%) out of 2 MLAs from LJP have declared assets valued more than Rs 1 crore. The average assets of the 80 MLAs who got re-elected almost tripled over the course of their five-year term, from Rs. 1 crore to Rs. 3 crore.
The share of MLAs with assets of over Rs 1 crore has more than tripled, with more than one out of every three incoming MLAs now a crorepati, while 14 new MLAs have assets of over Rs. 10 crore. In 2010, the average assets per MLA were Rs 82.46 lakh.
While 101 RJD candidates have average assets worth Rs 3.25 crore, 1,150 independent candidates have average assets of Rs 1.83 crore.
