New charges possible in death of woman in Boston
The elderly woman who was shoved to the ground in Chinatown on Wednesday has died of a head injury.
Charges against Downing could be upgraded if Lei succumbs to her injuries, prosecutors said. A cameraman working on the “Ghostbusters” movie called police and gave them a description that helped officers track down Downing.
Police say Tajanetta Downing, 24, bumped into the Yuzhen Lei near Chauncey and Essex streets.
According to a police report filed in court, Downing told investigators she had been “involved in an altercation with a woman”. She said Lei made the first move.
Additional charges are expected to be filed now that the woman has died.
Lei hit her head on the pavement and died Thursday at Tufts Medical Center.
Downing, of Jamaica Plain, was charged with aggravated assault and battery and assault and battery on a person 60 or older, and her bail on two other open assault cases was revoked.
The chief medical examiner will determine the cause of death, according to the district attorney’s office, and officials did not say if the charges will be upgraded. They say Downing kept walking but said she heard a bystander ask the woman if she was OK.
She was being held in jail in lieu of $75,000 bail.
