New Chelsea boss offers no hints on Drogba’s future with Impact
Didier Drogba may be set to leave MLS, as Montreal Impact, the striker’s current club, took to social media to indicate that they are in talks with Chelsea about the possibility of the Ivorian returning to Stamford Bridge.
Hiddink called Drogba a Chelsea legend, but as for luring him back, the Dutchman said “people have to deal with contracts and situations”.
Drogba made the move to the United States in July on a designated player contract for two seasons and scored 11 goals in 11 appearances for Impact.
The Impact, whose 2016 season would be seriously compromised if they lost their star player and attraction, responded with a tweet last Friday that read: “The rumour about Didier Drogba is unfounded”. Regardless, the Impact will not willingly let go of him after he helped get the team to the playoffs and beat Toronto FC in the first round.
Drogba was in London over the weekend to watch Chelsea’s 3-1 win over Sunderland.
Guus Hiddink has revealed he wants Didier Drogba to help out at Chelsea.
Chelsea, meanwhile, are going through one of their worst seasons in recent memory, and they need a morale boost after firing Jose Mourinho midseason.
Hiddink, who coached Drogba in a previous stint with Chelsea, gave no hints of that at his news conference.
“He is a legend already in this club, but also outside this club in the world”. “The only thing is that in this moment he is playing in Montreal”. Though it’s quite understandable that Joey Saputo’s club is handcuffed and can only hope to find terms with Chelsea and Drogba.
“We understand his attachment, but our objective is to have him back for another season”, Montreal tweeted.
