New ‘Daily Host’ host says tenor will change, not targets
Politico discovered the meetings in the official White House visitors’ log.
Jon Stewart revealed what he said was the truth behind the stories of his two secret White House meetings with President Obama.
That’s right, Stewart didn’t say anything more than a few indiscernible noises.
When Jon Stewart made fun of the Obama administration, White House staffers were definitely watching, cringing, and perhaps taking notes. At the 2011 visit, for instance, Obama used the meeting as a chance to push his economic plan and “lay the groundwork for his 2012 re-election campaign”.
With Jon Stewart’s final appearance on The Daily Show now just nine days away, the media is going to start wondering what we will do without his voice.
Citing Stewart’s viral influence-and popularity with the male 18-34 demographic-Obama’s administration tried to use Stewart and his show to help sell the White House agenda in the 2011 budget fight and the 2014 Russia-Ukraine conflicts.
Noah was referencing the story former Daily Show correspondent Wyatt Cenac told on the WTF podcast, about how Stewart made him, a correspondent, cry for expressing concern over a segment’s racial insensitivity. And if nothing else, it enables folks like you and me to get a rawer, more personal performance from a man who’s had to bear the weight of a nightly comedy show for almost 20 years. With 43 holding court for a whopping eight years of Stewart’s reign, he provided the host with a whole lot of monologue material.
Former White House aide Daz Vega told The New York Times that the president also wanted to reach out to younger voters who relied on Stewart for news. Before meeting with Stewart, the president had just completed a three-day bus tour in which he urged passage of his American Jobs Act. When Stewart stopped by the press secretary’s office after the first meeting, he offered some of his trademark facetious humor, saying it had been bad.
“I can’t read”, Stewart said.
For now, Stewart just about said all there is to say. “And I realized I’ve been working way too hard”.
Had Huckabee’s most recent headline-making comment actually left Stewart speechless?
