New ‘Daily Show’ Host Trevor Noah Tells Stephen Colbert About Jon Stewart
Speaking with the former Daily Show correspondent-turned-Late Show host, Noah told Colbert that he had doubts taking over for the “legend of talk shows” Jon Stewart.
Prior to taking the reins, Noah asked Stewart what form the show should take under his tenure.
While Noah told EW he’s excited for the opportunity to host The Daily Show, he described the format as “a massive undertaking”. “If you’re feeling uncomfortable then that’s the way you should be going”.
When Colbert himself had his own show on Comedy Central, “The Colbert Report”, he also targeted republicans, but in a satiric way in which he comically portrayed himself as a republican with ironic twists of making sense of certain topics in a de-humanizing way. Further, he made a call to citizens to vote.
“When you see somebody insane, like, somebody voted for them”, Noah said. When you have it, you don’t appreciate it.
The South African-born comedian does have a different perspective, but he stressed to Colbert that he understands the American point-of-view.
“I’m not an outsider”, Noah said of living in New York City.
Colbert asked the 31-year-old host, who has 10 years of experience to his name, what his hosting duties were like in South Africa.
“I genuinely am enjoying it, enjoying seeing the faces and the people and the fact that material is delivered to me”, he said.
Needless to say, Noah will have his work cut out for him if he wants to fill the satire show’s main topic that was so prevalent to Stewart on the show. “We weren’t allowed to play any clips”, said Noah of not being able to criticize the government.
