New England Patriots sign former Arizona Cardinals quarterback Ryan Lindley
The Patriots signed Flynn to a one-year contract in June as insurance for second-year quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo while Tom Brady awaited a decision on his four-game suspension.
Lindley found himself in an unfortunate situation last season with the Cardinals.
The release of Flynn has minimal financial implications, as his only guaranteed money came in the form of a $20,000 signing bonus. Belichick did not rule out the possibility that Flynn could return in the future. “The train’s moving”, Belichick said. “That’s the most important trait”, Belichick said of Lindley.
“[Lindley’s] got some experience”, Belichick said before Monday’s practice. “I know he worked hard; it was frustrating he couldn’t get out there, (that) we couldn’t see him out there”.
In 51 career appearances over his eight-season tenure in the NFL, Flynn has garnered a 61.3% completion percentage with 2,541 passing yards, 17 touchdowns, 11 interceptions, and a passer rating of 85.9. The struggles continued into the postseason, with Lindley completing 16 of 28 passes, but amassing just 82 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions in the process.
According to ESPN.com’s Field Yates, the Patriots will sign quarterback Ryan Lindley, who went 1-5 as a starting quarterback in three seasons with the Arizona Cardinals. “He’s been in a couple of different organizations and played some”.
Unfortunately, his time in New England was short, as the need for a healthy quarterback to carry the clipboard for Garappolo for the season’s first four weeks necessitates a move.
Once Flynn is healthy enough to play, however, he could be back in New England.
