New Giants coach McAdoo comfortable following Coughlin
That led to rampant criticism that Reese was not taking full ownership of the part he played in Coughlin’s eventual demise.
Tisch spoke about the decision to allow Coughlin to resign, and suggested – as many have speculated – that there was a nudge to push him in that direction.
Your guess is as good as mine, and as good as the general manager’s, and as good as the owner’s. He’s got a vision, he seems appropriately fearless. Ben knows where we need to improve. We can’t know. And neither can they.
But the new coach also indicated that it’s Reese who will build the next Giants roster.
“Believe me, I thought about the Mike Tomlin scenario quite a bit”, Giants co-owner and team president John Mara said in reference to the Steelers’ coach who was hired from relative anonymity as an assistant coach by Pittsburgh in 2007. That is faulty thinking.
While being the offensive coordinator for the Giants the past two season, McAdoo has earned the trust and respect from those within the organziation.
The clocks will continue to run five minutes fast. McAdoo has respect for Coughlin’s intense preparation methods, which is hardly a surprise since the no-nonsense McAdoo has apparently lived by that ethos his entire life. His appointment as offensive coordinator in 2014 was his first coordinator job after spending time in Green Bay as an offensive assistant. This likely wouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone in the Giants organization.
McAdoo has not served as a head coach at any level, but it’s been pointed out that the Giants also elevated a relatively obscure coordinator to the top job in late 1982, when they named future Hall of Famer Bill Parcells head coach. Considering the relationship that the 38 year old McAdoo has with his franchise quarterback, and the fact that the 35 year old Manning just inked an 84 million dollar contract good for the next four years, McAdoo was really not only the obvious choice, but the best choice. When the Giants sign a coach, they hope he’ll be around for the long haul.
While McAdoo becomes the head coach with the support of Giants players, quarterback Eli Manning in particular, he takes over for Coughlin after being a coordinator for only two seasons and with no head-coaching experience. He isn’t afraid to put the game in the offense’s hands. Mike McCarthy’s a grinder. That fact the fired coach Chip Kelly landed the job with the 49ers poured on more reason for Eagles supporters to lament the coaching search, and it left Philadelphia as one of three teams still aiming to fill their head coaching position.
“This is the capital of the world, and the football capital of the world and with that comes a certain amount of pressure, pressure I look forward to”, McAdoo told reporters, including CBS2’s Otis Livingston.
The Giants interviewed six men after Coughlin stepped down. Everything in and around the building, including two of the four Super Bowl trophies in the lobby, feels like it was built by the now former head coach.
The biggest question is if McAdoo can solve the $64,000 question.
After more than a decade with Tom Coughlin at the helm, the New York Giants have officially entered the McAdoo era. Now McAdoo has to find a way to channel the respect that Coughlin had commanded while somehow making the Giants his.
