New Hampshire looming, 2016 hopefuls make their case
At the last debate, moderators asked whether Clinton would be willing to release transcripts in the spirit of “full disclosure” for the paid speeches she delivered after leaving the State Department in 2013 – including to financial firms like Goldman Sachs.
It was the only time Sanders mentioned Clinton’s name directly, though he also alluded to some of her past high-paid speeches.
Clinton also turned the tables on Sanders, pointing to a vote he cast to deregulate the financial industry, which she said fueled the Great Recession.
The reflective, first-person turn in the stump speech is unusual for Clinton, who has used most of her appearances in the past few months to focus on Republicans and her policies, not directly reach out to Sanders’ supporters.
But – just hours before the New Hampshire primary – the self-described democratic socialist garnered some of the loudest applause of the afternoon by reminding voters of rival Hillary Clinton’s vote to authorize the war in Iraq. More than 80 percent of those who think honesty is the quality that matters the most in a candidate backed Sanders in Iowa, according to entrance polls.
Taking a detour from New Hampshire’s campaign trail, Hillary Clinton said Sunday that a water crisis in a MI city was “immoral” and demanded that Congress approve $200 million in emergency aid to address the community’s battle with lead-contaminated water.
“When the next bill came up, 2005, women’s issues were taken care of because I had made that a point back in 2001”, Clinton continued, referring to a later piece of legislation.
Fifty-six percent of participants had an unfavorable view of Clinton, compared to 39 percent who viewed her favorably. Why give a gift to Bernie Sanders when he has already tied her in the polls? More likely than not, what we imagine is actually worse than what she actually said behind closed doors. “You may have a favorite, but this is New Hampshire. Let’s – if this is now going to be a new standard, then it should apply to everybody and then I’ll be happy to look into it further”.
Sanders’s campaign is conducting its own precinct-by-precinct review and hopes to work with the state party to make other needed adjustments, she said. Calling the caucuses “a debacle”, the paper’s editorial board said the Democratic Party needs to figure out what went wrong and make sure it never happens again. “But you know what?”
“My understanding now is, her campaign says she’s not going to release those transcripts”, he said on CBS’s Face the Nation.
Earlier in the week, Sanders reiterated the same line, telling reporters on Tuesday that Clinton “has very significant political connections”. And she added a perhaps misguided pitch to Sanders’ crowd.
“I think we are the underdog now”, Sanders said. “What we do know, we know is that even a single child suffering lead poisoning due to the state’s neglect is one child too many”. “If we can bring out a decent vote on Tuesday, I am confident we’re going to win”, he said.
