New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx have agreed to satisfy with U.S. Sen.
Andrew Cuomo and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey – which operates bridges, tunnels and airports in the New York area though not the rail tunnel – have said they need a substantial commitment from the government for them to pledge their own funds.
On Tuesday, Cuomo’s office backtracked, saying they were never specifically invited to Tuesday’s meeting, which Cuomo spokeswoman Dani Lever said was understood to be focused on “New Jersey transportation infrastructure” and not the tunnel specifically.
Martin Robins, a former director of ARC and the Voorhees Transportation Center at Rutgers University, said cooperation among transit agencies is crucial to any successful rail tunnel project. That’s because the existing tunnel will be closed for repairs for a minimum of two years once a new one’s built.
Police in the New York village where Rosie O’Donnell lives says her teenage daughter was “of sound mind” when she was found in New Jersey after a week of being incommunicado.
The final 20 percent would be covered by local sources, including New Jersey, New York, and the Port Authority. “Every time I see this character talk out of both sides of his mouth, you realize how unqualified he is as a public official”, Stringer told reporters. And New York’s Penn Station needs to be expanded to accommodate increased traffic.
The federal government has moved to dismiss a lawsuit brought by New Jersey environmental officials against a research project that blasts the ocean floor with sound waves, mainly because the project is already finished. Electrical wires corroded by Hurricane Sandy’s floods prompted hours-long delays last month that highlighted the tunnel’s condition and previewed what could become a chronic problem if nothing is done.
The proposed Gateway tunnel venture, which might construct two new rail tunnels between New York and New Jersey, is getting plenty of consideration this summer time.
“It appears all parties are on the same page: the key to moving forward is obtaining federal grant support for the project”, Cuomo said. “I’ll go out there with a shovel myself, but we need the money”. Schumer along with Amtrak called for the creation of a nonprofit corporation that would take on the task of funding and building the much-needed tunnels that would replace the 105-year-old faltering corridors.
