New Jersey softball dads charged after bloody fight
Michael Barbella didn’t drive down to Salisbury from New Jersey to enjoy the United States Specialty Sports Association World Series softball tournament opening ceremony on Wednesday.
The fight, outside the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center, was recorded, and a video posted to the WorldstarHipHop.com website — a content-aggregating video blog known for its videos of public fights — had more than 640,000 views as of early Thursday evening.
Based on what is seen and heard on the video, captured by a witness, and police reports, the fight was over the men’s daughters, former teammates on a South Jersey travel softball team.
Cops and EMTs responded to the scene last night about 6 p.m. When the deputy arrived, Barbella was in front of the civic center being treated by EMS workers. “The brawl reportedly wrapped up with Duffy on top of Barbella, punching him in the face”, WMDT, the ABC News affiliate in Salisbury, Maryland, reported.
On this particular day, one of the fathers texted the other, challenging him to a fight in the parking lot.
They were apparently arguing over Barbella’s daughter being kicked off the team.
Both are charged with second-degree assault and disorderly conduct.
The footage shows the men rowing for around a minute, but then the altercation turns physical, with the pair grappling before Duffy begins landing punches.
Barbella was held in lieu of $20,000 bond after an initial court appearance in Maryland, and Duffy was released on his own recognizance, authorities said.
