New National Monuments Coming in Nevada, Texas, California
In Texas, Obama is creating a monument at Waco Mammoth, a relatively small site in central Texas where archaeologists have discovered remains of 24 Columbian Mammoths – the largest of the mammoth species – from more than 65,000 years ago, the White House said. So many of our citizens have worked long and hard to protect these bones and to have this NPS designation. California’s Berryessa Snow Mountain is “a landscape containing rare biodiversity and an abundance of recreational opportunities”.
Thompson directed a special thank you to the president. “I firmly believe our local ranchers, environmentalists, and community stakeholders are the best experts in ensuring Nevada’s lands are preserved, protected and accessible”. “It is something that we pass on from generation to generation, preserving the incredible beauty of this nation, but also reminding us of the richness of its history”. He has now bested Teddy Roosevelt in terms of protecting more land under the Antiquities Act, though Presidents Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton and Franklin D. Since 2012, Congressman Thompson and Senator Barbara Boxer have been introducing legislation to protect this area. Efforts to permanently protect the Berryessa Snow Mountain region through Congressional action have been made since 2012 without success.
He signed the order in the Oval Office, flanked by Interior Secretary Sally Jewell and officials from the Forest Service, National Park Service and Bureau of Land Management.
“As a farmer, my livelihood depends on land and water”, walnut farmer Craig McNamara told the Woodland Daily Democrat. These designations provide a boost to the local economies of surrounding communities by attracting visitors and generating more revenue and jobs, building on an outdoor recreation industry that already generates $646 billion in consumer spending each year. The area is also home to City, one of the most ambitious examples of the distinctively American land-art movement. California Coastal chinook salmon and Northern California steelhead spawn in the area’s waterways.
“And for me to be able to add to that heritage is greatly appreciated”, he said.
The information released by the White House so far has little to say on those topics, although for Basin and Range a monument “fact sheet” states that “certain historic uses, including livestock grazing and military use” will continue.
The still-unfinished sculpture, which Heizer has been making for almost 50 years and which Govan says is “98% finished”, sits on privately owned land in the Garden Valley area of Basin and Range.
The U.S. House of Representatives is considering a variety of proposals that would allow Congress to block Presidents from designating monuments, or veto monuments by not ratifying White House actions.
Waco’s Mammoth Site is now officially Waco Mammoth National Monument.
Obama used his authority under the Antiquities Act of 1906 to bring to 19 the number of new monuments he has designated since 2009.
The United States of America is full of both natural and historic landmarks.
President Barack Obama designated areas in Nevada, California and Texas as national monuments early Friday morning.
