New Orleans Pelicans re-sign guard Jimmer Fredette
The New Orleans Pelicans have dealt and are still dealing with numerous injuries during a disastrous 0-6 start, and now the Pelicans are bringing back Jimmer Fredette with their hardship exception, according to Shams Charania of Yahoo!
Fredette spent last season with the Pelicans, averaging just 3.6 points and 10.2 minutes per game in the 50 games he played with the team. He struggled making 3-point shots, hitting only 9-of-48 attempts.
The Pelicans’ mounting injuries finally benefited them. He played his first two seasons in Sacramento, before being traded midseason to Chicago in 2013-14 and ending up in New Orleans last summer.
Fredette, who was waived by the San Antonio Spurs just before the start of the 2015-16 season, is reportedly signing with one of his old teams, the New Orleans Pelicans. Fredette ended up joining the D-League draft where he was the second overall pick by the Westchester Knicks, the NY Knicks D-League affiliate. He has the ability to play on and off the ball.
Alvin Gentry said Monday that Fredette was high on their list. Norris Cole and Tyreke Evans are injured. For now though, Fredette joins a point guard group that has changed a lot. Small forward Quincy Pondexter continues to go through rehabilitation after undergoing surgery on his left knee in May.
Starting center Omer Asik could return on Tuesday night after missing the previous three games with a strained right calf.
Fredette is likely being added as insurance as there are three point guards ahead of him and Douglas and Smith have played pretty well in their time so far.
